Speaking of Obey, here’s an interesting article on the similarities between some historical graphics and some of Shepard Fairey’s work.
This is nothing new though. Many designers I know have appropriated graphics / textures / type from historical sources. My take on the issue is how far from the original can an artist take it. I have a good book called G1: New Dimensions in Graphic Design, partly written by Neville Brody, that is all about taking graphic elements out of their vernacular to change their meaning. Much of my work, and the whole rock poster/art print scene is primarly based on this fact. Just look at what Kozik did.

Shepard Fairey has designed some really cool covers for the Penguin Books re-issue of the George Orwell classic books “Nineteen Eighty-Four” and “Animal Farm”.
